I'm a lifelong designer that was raised and taught on Adobe products. After college, one of my first jobs was with an architectural sign company, which used CorelDraw. I consider myself lucky to have learned to use the software. Corel had some amazing features not found in Illustrator such as the ability to set your Scale so you don't outgrow your artboard (which I believe is a 3rd party add on for Illustrator), and the ability to quickly clip pictures by manipulating the surrounding nodes with the Shape Tool, and the list goes on...
Adobe has great software which I have used extensively over the last 15 years, there is no question about it. However, I am amazed at the value that the CorelDraw suite offers... especially given the price point at almost 1/4 the cost. The beautiful 300+ page book that comes with the suite is fantastic (a whole chapter on colors spaces? How awesome is that to have as a reference no matter what level you are as a designer). Plus all of the fonts, clipart, etc... I highly recommend the hard copy vs the download just for the book.
The only slight drawback to me is that the Corel hotkeys are different than Adobe's hotkeys. But, Corel provides a fold-out chart labeling all of the hotkeys (very cool on their part).
I will add to this review as I delve more into this latest release. But at the moment, it's such a great tool to use. My goal is to slightly break away from Photoshop and see what Photo-Paint can do.

I think CorelDRAW Graphics Suite X6 is a great alternative for anyone who doesn't need the heavy-duty Adobe package, and isn't a Mac user. CorelDRAW is Windows only.
CorelDRAW Graphics Suite X6 has 7 parts within the suite. The two major applications are CorelDRAW, a vector and illustration program and Photo-Paint, an image editing application. In addition, the application comes with a handful of useful utilities: bitmap converter PowerTrace, site designing tool Website Creator, screen-capture utility Capture, full-screen browser utility Connect, and an export plug-in utility called PhotoZoom Pro 2 and ConceptShare, an interactive online collaboration tool.
64-bit makes the program fast and responsive and Corel has added a number of new tools for designers; both print and online materials. There are hundreds of video tutorials showing off what's new while also teaching you.
Across a few of the apps in CorelDRAW Graphics Suite is a tray for storing images you may want to use in your work. The tray now includes little checkboxes that let you search Fotolia, Flickr, iStockPhoto, and other online sites, to find images for use. When you find an image, you can drag it to the tray to save it for later. Very handy. Another great option is the ability to drop a URL into the search bar and see all the graphics assets that appear on that page. Web designers in particular will find this tool handy. Dozens of templates and Site Styles remove much of the programming pains of Web design.
I haven't owned the application long enough to discover all the tricks it can perform, but I'm really impressed with what I've used.

I've been using CorelDraw for about twenty years, starting, I believe, with version 4 (not X4!). In the early days I used it at work to create graphics for presentations. Alas, we are now restricted to PowerPoint, which even today can't do the graphics CorelDraw did twenty years ago. But that's progress Microsoft style.
I still use CorelDraw at home. Novel years ago, and still selling points today, are its ability to generate any shape you want with Bezier curves, the rich set of fonts with great font-handling tools, and the wealth of clipart. (The last is important to those of us with limited drawing capabilities.) You have exquisite control over object size and placement. And the capabilities for coloring and shading objects has continued to grow over the years.
In the early years I found PhotoPaint difficult to use, and adopted Photoshop. My limited, more recent, experience with PhotoPaint is that it has come a long way. The convenience of being able to edit bitmaps "within" CorelDraw is certainly a plus. But I've learned to move work back and forth between CorelDraw and Photoshop, and don't really want to climb the PhotoPaint learning curve.
The comparison I can't make is to Illustrator, which I haven't used.
If you are upgrading from X5, what you notice on starting up is that you aren't asked what kind of file you want to create. (Maybe a setting I've forgotten?) But once you open a file everything looks the same. You have to hunt for the changes, they are relatively small. There are now smear and swirl tools, for example. While cool to play with, Photoshop has had somewhat similar tools for some time, and I've used them about twice in finished graphics.
If you are looking for a powerful graphics program, CorelDraw can do nearly anything, albeit with a learning curve. If you are looking to upgrade from X5 (or even X4) check the new features to see if you will really use them.
